MULTI MUSTS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR MULTIVITAMIN

If you've ever stood in the Vitamin Department staring at the rows of multivitamins trying to figure out which one you should get, you aren't alone. Many people choose multivitamins for a little added health insurance or the promise of more energy. After all, vitamins are organic nutrients required by the body for growth, repair, normal metabolism and optimal health, but few of us get the right ones at the right levels. That's because no single food contains all the vitamins and minerals the body requires; moreover, the combination of eating on the run, high levels of stress, consumption of highly processed foods, and the lack of physical activity can lead to nutrient deficiencies. 

Here are three key things to look for in your multi:

Balanced B's

Look for a multivitamin that offers a balanced vitamin B complex. The term "B complex" refers to the eight essential B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, folate and vitamin B-12. The B vitamins support circulatory function, hormone production, metabolism, brain function and the creation of proteins. 

Vitamin A

Your multi should provide vitamin A with at least half of that coming from beta-carotene or mixed carotenoids. 

Natural Vitamin E

Be sure you're getting natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) as opposed to synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol). Derived from vegetable oils, natural vitamin E is recognized by the body and absorbed more fully than its synthetic counterpart.
