Sprouts is proud to partner with Autism Speaks in creating a new Neighborhood Grant Program designed to fund local nonprofit organizations serving children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. As our company continues to grow, so does our ability to make an even greater impact in the neighborhoods we serve. From Feb. 27 to March 13, Sprouts shoppers can help this worthwhile program take root in their community by supporting our "Autism Speaks Puzzle Piece" fundraising campaign.

What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. This disorder is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, repetitive behaviors, intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.

• Autism affects 1 in 88 children
• There is a new diagnosis every 11 minutes
• Boys are 5 times more likely to have autism
• Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
• Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
• Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
• There is no medical detection or cure for autism

What does autism mean to Sprouts?

Sprouts Farmers Market CEO Doug Sanders knows the affects of autism firsthand; his 3-year-old son was diagnosed with autism in 2009. That’s when Sprouts saw an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the autism community through a partnership with Autism Speaks. Under Sanders’ leadership—backed by the support of Sprouts customers, team members and vendors—we've raised an incredible $2.2 million to fund programs that help bring autism awareness and support to local communities.

How does Sprouts partner with Autism Speaks?

We are fortunate to have passionate team members, vendors, and shoppers who have helped raise funds for autism research and awareness. This group is also active in supporting the Walk Now for Autism Speaks fundraising events in Arizona and California, and will soon to be a partner in Colorado.
